Investments in Costa Rica?… is not that an island?…someplace in the Caribbean?
My wife and I moved to Costa Rica six years ago from the frigid climate of Minnesota where we had owned a printing business enterprise for 15 years. For as long as we could recall we had worked 12 hour days and spent most of our time figuring out how to remain even…having ahead wasn’t even in the cards.
Then 9/11 occurred. And for us it was an epiphany. Life was as well short to spend the balance of our lives on a treadmill that went nowhere. We accelerated our retirement plans by just about ten years.
And more than the next year we sold every thing we owned and sooner or later found ourselves in Costa Rica (which, mind you, we had only visited as soon as previously…and on vacation at that !).
Stupid? In retrospect, positive. To move to a foreign country where we knew no a single, did not know the language and our only exposure was the world wide web? Of course, it was stupid.
But…we loved it, even in spite of the truth that life right here was completely unique than the books portrayed or the online showed. We rented a small household about an hour outside of San Jose in a community which was rural, coffee nation and but nevertheless large enough to have a hospital and inside 45 minutes of the main airport.
And we bought land…and we built a residence. And luckily, Rhonda had the temperament to deal with the neighborhood builders, even although we didn’t understand considerably Spanish. I still remained a kind A and the manana attitude drove me crazy.
And significantly of the true estate and building small business was unquestionably not in any “how to…” book that we ever discovered. And we unquestionably made errors. But luckily they didn’t hurt us Also substantially financially. And we asked a lot of concerns and we learned, small by tiny, how the actual estate industry functioned in Costa Rica.
And we decided that we wanted to let other folks know the factors that we had to discover the hard way. We started a genuine estate corporation whose sole aim was to present properties which reflected rates that locals paid…simply because there is a two tier true estate industry in Costa Rica…1 for “gringos” and 1 for Ticos (locals, as Costa Ricans call themselves).
Since there are really couple of rules or regulations for actual estate right here, our “exposure” of the market didn’t make us extremely well-known with other actual estate men and women. (bear in where to live in costa rica expat , Costa Rica is a Extremely small country…about the size of West Virginia or Houston). So our internet site did not exactly endear us to regional agents who have been utilised to charging whatever rates and commissions that they believed the visitors would bear.
And slowly we started to get a reputation…admittedly, some was fantastic, some terrible…depending upon who you talked to. And we began to get publicity…unsolicited publicity from magazines like Newsweek and Investors Business Every day. And our enterprise grew. And grew some far more.
As our enterprise grew we started to meet additional people from Costa Rica…some influential, some not… some high-quality, some not. And we became exposed to quite a few extra kinds of investments that have been completely foreign to us. And we learned who seriously “controls” the country and which folks manage investment capital and have the influence to make policy. To illustrate how substantially of our education was “coincidence” (and I personally do not think in coincidences… I believe that they occur for a reason) our third lawyer was introduced to us purely second hand at a regional gathering “coincidentally” his wife was from Minnesota…Rhonda was then invited to a weekly gathering of “gringas”, all of which married Ticos 35-40 years ago and who have now ALL grow to be extremely influential e.g., Minister of Finance Minister of Agriculture and two other former cabinet members.
